In Praise of the Dirndl

Dirndlqueen is a dedication to the dirndl, a dress with a legacy going back 150 years. Dirndl, a term for 'young girl', and the name given to the dress, originated as a simple servant's or maid's dress and was made of plain colours or simple check, denoting regional and social background.

The dirndl was adopted by the upper echelons of society in the late 1800s, when it was fashionable to emulate the simple life of the peasants, and made in expensive, embroidered fabrics of velvet, silk, satin and fine cottons.

There were many variations and styles of these exquisitely embroidered dresses, bodices and aprons; often accessorized with hats, feathers, bust adorning roses, brightly colored silk shawls, handcrafted jewellery, medallions and beads for the neck and waist.

These fine details in the dirndl dresses disclosed regional, social and historic status. Farmers would often show their wealth by displaying it on their wife’s dirndl, and it was common for a woman to show her dowry in the same way.

To this day, how you tie the apron bow on the dirndl indicates your marital status:

If you are engaged or married, tie your bow on the right side.
If you are young, free and single, tie your bow on the left side.
If you are widowed, tie your bow at the back.

The Dirndl and the Dirndlqueen

The beauty of the dirndl is that it can be worn by anyone with style. It is evocative of our fashion past, when dresses were only cut to flatter. Dirndlqueen takes the essence of the original dirndl, but gives it a radical new London look.

Our modern dirndl dresses, whether worn with a simple court shoe, a towering heel or dressed down with a pair of ankle boot, are both flattering and lady-like.

Each Dirndlqueen dress is lovingly made to order by a dedicated tailor and we handpick your fabrics, buttons and zips to ensure a perfect, tailored fit.

The Story of Dirndlqueen

Dirndlqueen was born in Summer 2012 when I was asked to design six bridesmaid dresses for an Anglo-German wedding.

The groom was a traditional English gent, the bride was a sassy Southern German girl. Both were confirmed Londoners, the city where they met and loved. The bridesmaids were aged between 20-35, some very quirky and independent , others more traditional, some from London, some from a small German town. All were very beautiful.

I have always been a huge fan of the dirndl dress and for the wedding I wanted to give the dirndl the London look. I love traditional English fabrics and wanted to stay as true to English heritage patterns as I could. I also wanted to make it work for differently shaped women of different ages, and the Dirndlqueen cut is so flattering, it worked, they all looked great!
